The Alpujarras route is one of the most surprising and interesting journeys in all of Andalusia. In reality, it is a vast area spanning two provinces: Granada and Almería. Why Take a Route Through the Alpujarras
This list of reasons will convince you to explore the Alpujarras route:
- Its natural landscapes are exceptionally beautiful and, notably, very diverse and distinct from those found elsewhere in Andalusia. It is worth noting that we are at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada National Park, and the entire territory is a mountain ecosystem.
- Its villages retain a striking charm, thanks in part to their secluded location away from major population centers. As a result, while walking here, visitors have the sensation of traveling back in time.
- The level of preservation of traditions here is remarkably high. For instance, you will discover fascinating examples of traditional architecture, such as the “tinaos” and the open-air irrigation channels (acequias) in the streets. You can also purchase highly original handcrafted items, such as “jarapas” (traditional rugs).
- The local gastronomy is a major draw for many, with special mention of delicacies such as Trevélez hams or the legendary Alpujarra stews.
- The Granada Alpujarra has become a wellness tourism destination, particularly due to the Lanjarón spa as well as other municipalities that have developed health proposals and spas, such as La Taha.
- History enthusiasts can revisit a compelling chapter of Spanish history: the Rebellion of the Alpujarras in the 16th century, which challenged the government of Philip II just as the Spanish Empire was at its zenith.
Essential Places on This Route
The Alpujarras route can begin from either Granada city or Almería city. If starting from Granada, the municipality of Lanjarón is known as the Gateway to the Alpujarra, a title similar to that given to Alhama de Almería when starting from Almería.
If you decide to take this route from Granada, after passing through Lanjarón, you can head to Pampaneira and Capileira, two of the most iconic villages on this itinerary. Continuing along the beautiful A-4132 mountain road, you will reach Trevélez, famous for its hams and panoramic views. After visiting this village, you can take another road with similar characteristics, the A-4130, which will lead you through other charming small towns such as Mairena, Válor, and Laroles.
From here, there are two ways to enter the Almería Alpujarra: the most comfortable by car via Picena, Cherin, and Alcolea; or another route bordering the Arroyo del Palancón, which is steeper but perhaps more beautiful, via Bayárcal and Paterna del Río. In either case, you will arrive at the two most iconic villages of the Almería Alpujarra: Laujar de Andarax and Fondón.
As mentioned, this is just one proposed route through the Alpujarras, encompassing towns in both Granada and Almería.
