The Mosque

of Córdoba: a forest of columns with a cathedral at its center

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has been a World Heritage Site since 1984, and you only need to cross the Puerta del Perdón to understand why: more than 800 columns of marble, jasper, and granite stretch in all directions, supporting a double row of red and white arches that repeat until they fade into the distance.

In the middle of this forest of columns stands a complete Renaissance cathedral, with a transept, vaults, and a carved wooden choir, built centuries after the original mosque without tearing down anything around it. The contrast is so strong that it surprises even those who have seen photos before arriving: Arabic columns on one side and Christian stained glass and altarpieces on the other, within the same space.

The mihrab, with its decoration of golden mosaics commissioned from Byzantine artisans, and the Patio de los Naranjos itself, with its fountains and the scent of orange blossom in spring, complete a tour where every corner changes style without warning.

What you will discover on this guided tour of the

Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

Mezquita Catedral de Cordoba

The forest of columns

More than 800! columns of marble, jasper, and granite—many repurposed from Roman and Visigothic buildings—support a double row of red and white arches. Walking among them, with the light filtering in from the courtyard, is the image that has made the Mosque of Córdoba famous across the globe.
mihrab-mezquita

The mihrab

The niche that marked the direction of prayer toward Mecca, decorated with golden and glass Byzantine mosaics that arrived directly from Constantinople by order of Al-Hakam II. It is the most ornate piece of the entire complex and one of the most important examples of Islamic art outside the Middle East.
capilla-mayor-cordoba-mezquita

The Capilla Mayor

The heart of the cathedral built in the 16th century inside the mosque, featuring Gothic vaults, a Renaissance transept, and a choir carved in mahogany. Its construction divided the city at the time, and today it remains the contrast that defines the entire monument.
patio-naranjos-cordoba

The Patio de los Naranjos

The former ablutions courtyard, where the faithful washed before prayer, now converted into a garden of orange trees, palms, and fountains. From here, the true scale of the building and its bell tower can be appreciated better than from any other point.
puerta-del-perdon-cordoba

The Puerta del Perdón

The main entrance to the site, built in the 14th century over a former minaret, featuring plasterwork decoration and a large riveted bronze door. It is the usual meeting point to start the guided tour, right in front of the Patio de los Naranjos.
capilla-villaviciosa-cordoba

The Villaviciosa Chapel

One of the spaces where the transition between the two uses of the building is best appreciated: lobed arches of Caliphal tradition coexist with a Christian dedication, in what was the first Catholic chapel built inside the mosque after the conquest of 1236.
