In 1248, Seville fell to Christian hands. What followed was the construction of a temple that would stand where the Aljama, the great mosque, had been… But the conquerors did not completely erase the past: the Islamic minaret remained standing, was adapted, and was crowned with Christian symbols. That is the Giralda.
The Cathedral and its bell tower tell a story that cannot be read in fragments. They must be seen together, interpreted by someone who understands what was destroyed, what was preserved, and what each architectural choice made by the builders nearly 800 years ago meant.
