Medina Azahara stretches across three stepped terraces on the slopes of Sierra Morena, on the outskirts of Córdoba: nearly 1,500 hectares of palaces, a mosque, dwellings, gardens, and workshops, of which only a small part has been excavated today. Caliph Abd al-Rahman III ordered its construction in 936 as the seat of his government and a symbol of power intended to rival Baghdad or Constantinople.
The Salón Rico, with its horseshoe arches and stone-carved vegetal decoration, was the space where the caliph received embassies from across the Mediterranean. Around it, cobbled streets, remains of baths, and house foundations outline the layout of a city that once housed tens of thousands of inhabitants, and which was reduced to rubble in just seven decades, destroyed during the civil war that ended the Caliphate.
Walking among its walls today is to traverse an entire capital, frozen at the exact moment it ceased to exist.

Without someone to explain it, Medina Azahara is just loose stones and house foundations. With a specialist in Caliphal art, every wall recovers its function and history.

You come and go when you want, without adjusting to the fixed schedule of a shuttle bus or sharing the tour with other groups. It is a private visit, truly private.

Combine it with the rest of Córdoba
Medina Azahara pairs well with a visit to the Mosque-Cathedral or the historic center. We can organize the full day if you want to make the most of your time.
The visit lasts about 3 hours, including the transfer from Córdoba and the tour of the site. If you want to spend more time at the museum or delve deeper into a specific point, we can adjust the duration to your preference.
Yes. We manage the entrance to the archaeological site and the museum visit, so you don’t have to worry about any arrangements.
The site is about 8 km from the center of Córdoba. We include a private round-trip transfer from your accommodation, so you don’t need your own car or to rely on the public shuttle bus.
It is an outdoor tour with sections of uneven terrain and very little shade, so we recommend comfortable footwear and sun protection, especially in the hotter months. If anyone in the group has reduced mobility, please let us know when booking so we can include the most accessible areas.
Yes. We adapt the pace and explanations to the ages of the younger ones. The open spaces and the scale of the site usually surprise children as well.
Of course. We can link this visit with the Mosque-Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, or the historic center of Córdoba, and organize the full day according to your interests.
