A Jewish quarter

to explore street by street and courtyard by courtyard

Seville’s Jewish quarter, Santa Cruz, is the smallest and most densely packed neighborhood in the Andalusian capital: streets narrow until two people can barely pass side by side, courtyards hinted at behind wrought-iron gates, and squares the size of a living room.

The city’s Jewish community lived here for centuries, and its origins still shape the layout: there isn’t a single straight street, because the neighborhood grew house by house, without planning, around three synagogues that today are churches.

Getting lost in Santa Cruz is the best way to know it: follow the scent of orange blossom to a courtyard lined with flowerpots, sit on a tiled bench in Doña Elvira Square, or stop in front of the ceramic skull on Susona Street—the one that recalls the city’s most-told legend of love and betrayal.

With a private guide who knows every name and every story, the walk stops being merely pretty and starts to make perfect sense.

What you will discover on this guided tour of

Seville’s Jewish Quarter

calle-susona

Susona Street

The street that recalls Seville’s most-told legend: the story of Susona, daughter of a convert, who betrayed her own father’s conspiracy out of love for a Christian knight. In her will, she asked for her skull to hang on the façade of her house as penance.
Plaza de Doña Elvira

Doña Elvira Square

The present-day heart of Santa Cruz: orange trees, tiles, and whitewashed façades around a square redesigned in the early 20th century. Here the medieval city becomes a stage, with ceramic benches and balconies overlooking narrow streets.
iglesia-santa-maria-blanca

Church of Santa María la Blanca

Built in the 13th century as a synagogue, it changed faith after the 1391 assault. Its side façade still preserves Roman columns with Visigothic capitals—remnants of the different layers added to the same building over the centuries.
Hospital de los Venerables

Hospital de los Venerables

One of the great jewels of Sevillian Baroque, built in the 17th century as a residence for elderly priests. Its church and central courtyard, with the sunken fountain typical of Sevillian architecture, reveal Golden Age Seville at the height of its artistic splendor.
Callejón del Agua

Callejón del Agua

One of the city’s most striking corners: a narrow passageway running alongside the Alcázar walls, with jasmine and bougainvillea peeking through the grilles of private courtyards. Its name comes from the old channel that supplied the royal precinct, still visible along some stretches of the wall.
Jardines de Murillo

Murillo Gardens

Former Alcázar orchards turned into a public garden in the early 20th century, with ponds, small round plazas, and lush vegetation wrapping Santa Cruz’s eastern edge. A good place to pause and contrast the bustle of medieval streets with the green silence that surrounds them.
