Aquariums and Zoos in Andalusia: A Draw for Family Tourism

Aquariums and zoos in Andalusia, together with its theme parks, are among the main attractions for those enjoying family tourism in this region. There are many and they are highly varied, and its animal parks are spread across many of the provinces in the autonomous community. In this post, we devote space to the most important ones and mention the rest in a list at the bottom of the page.

The Best Zoos in Andalusia

As we mentioned, zoos in Andalusia are very diverse, as they offer different concepts to visitors. Of course, many are ‘classic’ options: animal parks that bring together native and exotic species, visible to visitors on the other side of the fence. This is the case for the venues on the Costa del Sol, in Málaga, such as Selwo Aventura in Estepona and Bioparc in Fuengirola. This is also the concept of the Zoological Park of Córdoba, which was one of the first in Spain, as it opened in 1967. And, of course, MundoPark Zoo in the Andalusian capital, Seville.

On the other hand, in a region so closely linked to the sea, it is only natural that there are large aquariums that invite visitors to discover the marine fauna of these and other latitudes. The most important is the Seville Aquarium, with more than 3,000 m3 of water, 400 species and a themed concept based on the setting of the first circumnavigation of the world, an expedition that departed from here in 1519 under Magellan’s command. Another example is the Almuñécar Aquarium, in Granada. And Almería, one of Spain’s diving paradises, could not be left off this list: it has an interesting aquarium in Roquetas de Mar. In addition, there are other venues dedicated to aquatic wildlife, although they are not exactly aquariums: Selwo Marina in Benalmádena, with dolphins and penguins as its main stars, and the Crocodile Park in Torremolinos.

In addition to these aquariums and zoos in Andalusia, there are other animal-focused spaces that stand out for their originality. One of the favourites among children and adults is the Níjar Butterfly Park, which has its equivalent in the Benalmádena Butterfly Park. In addition, Andalusia’s ornithological richness does not go unnoticed, as there are several spaces dedicated to birds, such as Cañada de los Pájaros in the Doñana area (Seville) and the Loro Sexi Ornithological Park in Almuñécar. And the wolf, a species sadly maligned by many, also has its own space at the Lobo Park in Antequera.
