There are many things to see in Almonaster la Real, as it is one of the most beautiful villages in the province of Huelva and in all of Andalusia. In fact, it is part of the famous ‘The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain’ network, which is becoming a hallmark of quality and a guarantee for rural tourism lovers in Spain. Furthermore, this tourism potential is now more important than ever, as it is expected to help this municipality, struck by the worst forest fire of 2020, rise from its ashes.
Although the scars are visible in the surrounding vegetation, dominated by Mediterranean pine, the numerous monuments to see in Almonaster la Real are well worth a visit. Below, we show you the most interesting highlights of this municipality.
What to see in Almonaster la Real
Almonaster la Real is located in the heart of the Sierra de Huelva, specifically within the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. It preserves numerous monuments thanks to its rich history, having been inhabited by Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, and finally Castilians after the Reconquista period of the peninsula.

Its most famous monument is likely the 10th-century mosque, an exceptional complex that has reached the present day in excellent condition. Spaces such as the ablutions courtyard (shan), the prayer hall (haram), the qibla wall, the mihrab, and the minaret can still be appreciated. Naturally, all of this was utilized and modified when it was converted into a Christian religious temple. Toledo-style masonry and brickwork predominate in the structure, but some Roman ashlar blocks are also visible, reused for a Visigothic Christian temple before its use as a mosque.
No less interesting is the castle, located at the highest point of the village, atop the hill. The views from this 9th-century fortress captivate its visitors. Within its parade ground, a later enclosure from 1821 opens up, surprisingly well-integrated: a charming bullring that can boast of being one of the oldest in the country. A testament to the Roman era is the beautiful medieval bridge, built upon a structure likely dating back to the 1st or 2nd century AD.
Other things to see in Almonaster la Real include its religious buildings, which are still in full use today. The Gothic-Mudéjar style Church of San Martín stands out, as do its various hermitages and chapels: Santa Eulalia, El Señor, and Santísima Trinidad, which are held in great devotion by the locals. Finally, its museums are worth mentioning, remarkable for a village of just over 1,000 inhabitants: the Don Manuel Vázquez Vargas Museum, featuring Baroque, Romantic, and Modernist works, as well as the Al-Ándalus Interpretation Center.
