The 5 Best Diving Sites in Almería

As we mention on our page dedicated to diving in Andalusia, the province of Almería is one of the most highly-rated places in Spain for this activity. So, if you are considering starting out or if you wish to elevate the quality of your experience, take a look at this post where we show you the 5 best diving sites in Almería. An activity that, by the way, you can enjoy with Andalucía Exclusiva.

San Andrés Island

Located off the town of Carboneras, its high value is evident through its designation as a Natural Monument. Of volcanic origin, the protected area covers approximately 10 hectares. Here you can spot octopuses, corvinas, cuttlefish, and other species. You can do so safely, as one of its advantages is that there will always be a side protected from sea currents.

Playa de los Muertos

Despite its striking name—chosen because the remains from nearby shipwrecks used to wash up here—this area can be explored by everyone. Experts can dive with oxygen and scuba gear, while the less adventurous can enjoy it from the surface while snorkeling. It is rich in corals and aquatic plants. However, it is located about 5 km south of Carboneras and is not easily accessible, so you should go with a professional instructor who is well-acquainted with the diving sites in Almería.

Cueva del Francés

This is a very evocative spot, as it is a small grotto where it is easy to observe groupers and pollack, among others. Posidonia seagrass is also abundant on the seabed in this area. The nearest town is Isleta del Moro, but it can only be accessed by boat, so you will also need the services of a professional to accompany you.

Cala de los Amarillos

It takes its name from the ochre color of the volcanic rocks that form its landscape. The most emblematic species at this spot, near Playa de los Genoveses, is the triggerfish, which moves in groups among the rocks. The nearest village is San José, and it is an area frequently chosen by diving schools, so you might end up here if you take a diving course in Almería.

Chocolita Shipwreck

Finally, a different proposal for those interested in diving in Almería: diving to observe a shipwreck. Specifically, the Chocolita, which ended up at the bottom of the sea due to a heavy storm in 1927. It is located at a depth of about 10 meters and currently hosts an interesting diversity of marine fauna and flora. The nearest beach is Las Martinicas, in the vicinity of Carboneras.

These are five suggestions for diving in Almería, but there are many others adapted to any level. If you wish to explore any of these areas or others closer to your holiday destination, please contact Andalucía Exclusiva to plan it: we will book your accommodation, your course, and any other details you may need.
