A Series with Extraordinary Locations
One of the reasons for the success of the Game of Thrones series has been its excellent choice of locations. Throughout the 8 seasons of this television adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s novels, filming has taken place in diverse and spectacular locations such as Essaouira in Morocco or the Mediterranean island of Malta.
In Andalusia, for example, the perfect recreation for Dorne was sought, but also other environments described in Martin’s novels that seem to evoke southern Spain. In fact, in addition to the Game of Thrones locations in Seville, there are also others that were filmed in the provinces of Córdoba and Cáceres.
Game of Thrones Locations in Seville
If there is one place that has forever been linked to Game of Thrones in Seville, it is the Real Alcázar. In the series, these are the Water Gardens, the palace where the Martells, the rulers of Dorne, reside. The places best recognized in the series’ episodes are the Jupiter Pond Garden and the Ladies’ Garden. The Hall of Ambassadors also shines with special beauty, with its spectacular golden dome.
The Royal Shipyards (Reales Atarazanas) were also an important filming location for Game of Thrones in Seville, specifically to set the scene for King’s Landing. Its historic 13th-century Gothic arches, from an era when ships were built for navigation on the Guadalquivir, shelter spectacular dragon skulls in the series.

However, not everything was filmed at the Real Alcázar, nor even in the Andalusian capital. Within the province of Seville, our route takes us to the ancient Roman city of Itálica, now Santiponce. The episode of the seventh season in which Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen confront each other for the first time was filmed in the ruins of its amphitheater.
Finally, it is also worth mentioning the Osuna Bullring, which, with a little special effects, served to set the scene for Daznak’s Pit, the most spectacular fighting arena in Meereen, in this case in the fifth season. The Museum of Osuna, located in the former Palace of the Arjona and Cubas Brothers, has set up a room in its facilities to display images of these scenes, a significant event for the town.
