Tradition, light and flavour. These are three of the main elements that make up Christmas in Andalusia. In this post, however, we offer more specific ideas so you can enjoy this region to the fullest at this time of year which, incidentally, is usually characterised by milder temperatures than in the rest of Spain. The suggestions we share here will be helpful whether you prefer to spend a few quiet days in a rural destination or whether you would like to visit one of the region’s major cities. A special atmosphere can be felt in every corner!
Villages to ‘taste’ Christmas in Andalusia
There is no doubt that, in villages, Christmas has—quite literally—a different flavour. One of the great attractions of travelling to Andalusia at this time of year is sampling its traditional pastries, in some cases with Protected Geographical Indication status, and often the stars of events and Christmas markets. Here is a list to note down if you would like to follow a route with this theme:
- Estepa (Seville), famous for its mantecados
- Medina Sidonia (Cádiz), where the delicious alfajores are made
- Antequera (Málaga), with convent sweets you will not be able to resist
- Montoro (Córdoba), home to exquisite marzipan
- Rute (Córdoba), where a large chocolate nativity scene is built every year
Living nativity scenes are another major attraction of Christmas in rural Andalusia. Many villages organise these performances, often featuring their own residents. Particularly noteworthy are:
- Almayate, a hamlet of Vélez-Málaga (Málaga)
- Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz)
- Beas, a hamlet of Aljaraque (Huelva)
- Corrales, a hamlet of Aljaraque (Huelva)
And if what you enjoy most about Christmas is traditional carols, you must not miss the flamenco zambomba in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). It is the perfect excuse to stroll through the city’s taverns, where these cheerful musical performances are held (sometimes spontaneously) and where you can also sample the famous wines of the Sherry Triangle.

Cities decked out with lights and markets
However, if you would like to spend Christmas in Andalusia to enjoy a magical combination of lights and markets, you should visit one of its cities. Naturally, the capital, Seville, hosts the large Nativity Fair next to the Cathedral, along with other Christmas markets in the Alameda, the Prado de San Sebastián and Nervión.
Málaga is not far behind, decorating Calle Larios with particular care, as well as Plaza de la Constitución and the city centre in general. Many people also come here to do other types of shopping—more general and gift-focused—thanks to its wide range of shops and shopping centres, including luxury retail.
As you can see, the options are very varied. So, if you would like a helping hand organising your Christmas holidays in Andalusia, please do not hesitate to contact our agency, as we can arrange a tailor-made package for you, including accommodation.
