As in other posts on this blog dedicated to Jaén, Huelva, or Seville, here we dedicate one to the best churches in Málaga province. These are small temples of surprising beauty that, if you are staying on the Costa del Sol or anywhere else in the region, you can visit on a quick getaway. Any of them are worthwhile, especially if you add a visit to the municipality that hosts them, as our selection takes us to three monumental towns: Antequera, Ronda, and Álora.

Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor, Antequera
One of Antequera’s nicknames is ‘the city of churches,’ due to their large number and beauty. And this is, without a doubt, one of the best churches in Málaga, so it could not be missing from this list. Furthermore, the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor is considered by many experts to be the first Renaissance-style building in the region. Its 16th-century structure is as interesting as the pieces exhibited inside, now deconsecrated, which remains an open-plan, columned space.

Church of Carmen, Antequera
The Church of Carmen also began construction in the 16th century, though in a completely different style: Mudéjar, as can be seen, for example, in the coffered ceiling of the nave. However, there are other elements of different styles and equal interest, especially its Baroque altarpieces. Furthermore, its appeal also lies in the viewpoint that opens outside, offering views of the municipality and its surroundings.

Church of Santa María la Mayor, Ronda
One of the striking features of this temple is its large dimensions, including its floor plan, as it was actually built on the site of Ronda’s former main mosque. In fact, the original mihrab is preserved inside. Therefore, its origins date back to the 13th century, although its current appearance reflects various construction periods since the 16th century: Gothic tower and arches, Baroque altar, Mannerist elements, etc.

Church of the Holy Spirit, Ronda
Sober and fortress-like in appearance, the Church of the Holy Spirit also deserves a place on this list of the best churches in Málaga province. With a Gothic and Renaissance exterior, it was built by order of the Catholic Monarchs. Its interior decoration is modest, but traveling here will also be worthwhile to see the nearby and imposing Almocabar Gate.

Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, Álora
Although Álora’s most famous monument is its Arab Castle, it also boasts one of Málaga’s most beautiful churches: the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. Built in the 17th century, its spectacular bell tower stands out, visible from practically every corner of the town. Inside, its large columns and wooden coffered ceiling lend it a special solemnity.
In short: five churches in three towns that should not be missed on your travel itinerary, as they preserve some of the best churches in Málaga.
