Experience the Jerez Horse Fair: the city in all its glory

The Jerez de la Frontera Horse Fair is, alongside Holy Week, one of the crowning moments for the city and its residents, who are swept up in a festive spirit that they display and share at the Real with all visitors. It is no coincidence that it has been declared a Festival of International Interest. In this post, we provide all the information you need to visit the city during these significant dates and enjoy an experience that will be the perfect highlight of your trip.

What is the Jerez Horse Fair: Origins and Today

The Jerez Horse Fair centers around the horse, as its name suggests, but it is much more besides. Its origins date back to the time of Alfonso X the Wise, when the holding of a livestock market was approved in this newly reconquered city. Therefore, it initially served an economic and commercial purpose. Over time, however, it evolved into a festive event, where the exhibition of horses and carriages became another reason to visit the grounds, which also featured marquees for eating, drinking, and dancing, as well as other popular festivities such as bullfights.

This is the essence that has endured to the present day: on one hand, it maintains its original function as a livestock fair, with numerous horse-related events; on the other hand, a true Andalusian-style festival is set up at the Real (fairgrounds), featuring marquees, attractions, musical performances, and a joyful atmosphere where locals and visitors alike dress in their finest attire.

Equestrian Attractions at the Fair

Those interested in the equestrian world will find numerous attractions at the Jerez Horse Fair. The program always includes countless acts and events for lovers of this noble animal. One of the most popular is the traditional Carriage Driving Competition, an exhibition-style event where the highlights are not only the horses but also the carriages they pull and the coachmen themselves.

True horse enthusiasts will also enjoy the traditional Morphological Competition, specifically for the Pure Spanish Breed, where participants exhibit their finest specimens, showcasing not only significant anatomical features but also functional skill. Naturally, other classic equestrian fair events and competitions are also present, such as dressage, ‘doma vaquera’, and ‘acoso y derribo’.

Popular Attractions of the Fair

The Jerez Horse Fair program brings together endless proposals for the enjoyment of horse lovers and all visitors in general. The heart of the fair is the Real, where all the marquees are concentrated, serving typical fair food and drink (rebujitos, fino and oloroso wines, fried fish, Jerez-style ‘berza’ stew, etc.), with a tapas competition organized to reward the best culinary offerings.

Of course, there is no shortage of musical performances, with a focus on flamenco, as this city is considered one of the meccas of this genre. Numerous amusement rides are also set up, which locals call ‘cacharritos’ and which delight the little ones. More generally, an undeniable attraction is watching the people of Jerez dressed in their finest attire, with special mention to the flamenco dresses worn by girls and women, full of ruffles and color. The horses, naturally, also look the part, with richly decorated bridles.

When and where it is held

The Jerez Horse Fair is typically held in the month of May and lasts for nine days. Its epicenter is the Real or fairgrounds, located in the González Hontoria Park. Regarding equestrian events, the designated venues are the Depósito de Sementales for morphological and carriage driving competitions, and the Cortijo de Vicos for the “acoso y derribo” events. For further details, we recommend consulting the final program, which is usually published a few weeks in advance.
