Contemporary Architecture in Andalusia

Undoubtedly, Andalusia is a region that stands out for its historic buildings and monuments. We have already provided a good overview of this in the article dedicated to cathedrals, and we will do so in others about castles or main squares, among others. However, beyond tradition, the region is also making significant progress in terms of avant-garde design. For this reason, we have prepared a post featuring the best examples of contemporary architecture in Andalusia, which also attract the attention of many tourists interested in this type of art.

Seville, a benchmark in contemporary architecture in Andalusia

As is often the case, the capital is the benchmark for avant-garde and innovation. This holds true for Seville, a true spearhead of contemporary architecture in Andalusia. This is not a new phenomenon, but one that dates back three decades to Expo ’92. The great international exhibition organized by the city led to the construction of significant modern buildings around Isla de la Cartuja. Although many of them fell into disuse, one stands out and remains fully operational: the Alamillo Bridge, one of Santiago Calatrava’s first major works.

Another now iconic building in the city is Torre Sevilla, the tallest skyscraper in all of Andalusia, standing at 180 meters. Although it initially generated reluctance due to its visual impact, it now seems to have been accepted by all Sevillians, who see it as an avant-garde touch to the city’s skyline. It was designed by the great Argentine architect César Pelli, creator of the famous Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. And soon there will be another to rival it: the 150-meter Torre Panorámica Entrenúcleos, next to Loyola University, already within the municipality of Dos Hermanas.

Metropol Parasol of Seville – Known as the Mushrooms of Seville

But without a doubt, the current jewel of contemporary architecture in Andalusia is Metropol Parasol, better known as the Mushrooms of Seville, due to what it suggests to those who pass by its location: Plaza de la Encarnación. Designed by the German Jurgën Mayer, it also houses an archaeological museum and provides shelter for a performance space. Its spectacular wooden and concrete pergola can be visited.

Granada: Museum of Memory of Andalusia

This city is home to some interesting examples of contemporary architecture in Andalusia. In fact, the city’s Tourism Board proposes a thematic route featuring them. The Museum of Memory of Andalusia, a work by Alberto Campo Baeza, undoubtedly stands out on this route. He combined the rectitude of the screen-building and the elliptical trace of the central courtyard in its design, inspired by the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra.

Almonte, Huelva: an avant-garde theater

Finally, a demonstration that contemporary architecture in Andalusia can also reach smaller towns: the Almonte Theater, in this municipality in the province of Huelva. Designed by Donarie Arquitectos, it stands out for its large, bare volumes and the spaciousness of its common areas, which provide great luminosity. It integrates perfectly into a larger cultural complex, which boasts a clear outdoor area to admire the work.
