However, these establishments are not this way by chance. In this post, we share some facts and curiosities you should know about them, which distinguish them from similar venues around the world, such as those in the coastal destinations of Mandala Tours (the agency group to which Andalucía Exclusiva belongs), including the Red Sea coast in Egypt, the Turquoise Coast in Turkey, etc.

What are chiringuitos?

If you are not from Spain, this term might not be so familiar to you. This name is used to refer to dining establishments located right on the beach, often with a wooden structure or of a temporary nature, either entirely or partially on the sandy shore of the beach. This means they usually have access from both the promenade and the aforementioned sands, making them ideal for a break between swims. The structure is typically in harmony with the environment, featuring maritime decor, thatched roofs, and natural elements. The customer areas usually stand out for their open character, in the form of a terrace or large windows with sea views.

Why they are called that

Chiringuitos in Andalusia are not the only ones to be called this; the term is also applied to those in the rest of the country. In fact, it is believed that the term became popular in the mid-20th century thanks to an establishment in Sitges with this name.

It is difficult to trace the origin of this term, but various experts connect it to the word “chiringo” from Cuban Spanish which, despite not being mentioned in the DRAE, refers to the stream of coffee that comes through a cloth filter. Therefore, at some point in the 19th century, it began to be used to name the street or coastal establishments where this drink was served. From there, it eventually made the leap to Spain via transoceanic travelers.

Nevertheless, other assembly-style wooden stalls on the beach are documented in the pre-tourism era, where fishermen and local people ate seasonal catches and food; thus, these can also be considered ancestors of these establishments.

When chiringuitos in Andalusia are open

There is no strict calendar governing chiringuitos in Andalusia. It can be said that they are open as long as the good weather lasts, which includes summer, of course, but their opening is increasingly brought forward to spring or even Easter. Their closing also depends on the weather, with late September being the most common date.

Regarding opening hours, everything depends on each municipal license, but they typically open mid-morning and remain open until closing after dinner, for example at 10:30 PM. That is to say, they are not typical establishments for breakfast, and their hours are linked to beach activity, closing after sunset when the sands empty.

What you can eat and drink

Again, every chiringuito is different and each offers its own menu. But without a doubt, a common staple is the preparation of pescaíto frito (fried fish), as we mentioned in the article about espetos. Grilled meat or even rice dishes such as paellas are also very common in chiringuitos. As for drinks, refreshing options are preferred, where sangría and tinto de verano find their natural habitat.

In any case, it is worth remembering that chiringuitos in Andalusia do not correspond to the idea of sophisticated beach clubs; that is, they are not designed for lounging on sunbeds or for chill-out music sessions, and they have a more family-oriented and popular atmosphere.

Chiringuitos in Andalusia are a true hallmark of summer tourism, offering pleasant moments that many people long for throughout the rest of the year.
