One of Antequera’s nicknames is ‘the city of churches,’ due to their large number and beauty. And this is, without a doubt, one of the best churches in M\u00e1laga, so it could not be missing from this list. Furthermore, the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa Mar\u00eda la Mayor is considered by many experts to be the first Renaissance-style building in the region. Its 16th-century structure is as interesting as the pieces exhibited inside, now deconsecrated, which remains an open-plan, columned space. <\/p>\n\n

The Church of Carmen also began construction in the 16th century, though in a completely different style: Mud\u00e9jar, as can be seen, for example, in the coffered ceiling of the nave. One of the striking features of this temple is its large dimensions, including its floor plan, as it was actually built on the site of Ronda’s former main mosque. In fact, the original mihrab<\/em> is preserved inside. Therefore, its origins date back to the 13th century, although its current appearance reflects various construction periods since the 16th century: Gothic tower and arches, Baroque altar, Mannerist elements, etc. <\/p>\n\n
